How Do You Know It’s Time To Leave Your Church?

The latest episode of WhatItIzWhatItBeezLike?! is one of those conversations that lingers long after the audio stops. Host King Cyz sits down with CHH artist Chris Caro for a raw, unhurried conversation about faith, fatherhood, and the painful work of walking away from a church that had become unsafe.

If you’ve ever wondered whether the discomfort you feel at church is just “church hurt” or something deeper, this episode speaks directly to you.

A Radical Encounter, and a Long Detour

Chris’s story starts the way a lot of artists’ stories do: music was in him from the time he was a toddler. After a radical encounter with Jesus in 2012, he discovered that he could glorify God through hip-hop — and he started creating. But as he got more connected to a church, the message shifted. Leadership steered him to “put the music aside” and focus on discipleship. For years, Chris couldn’t tell how much of that was God’s plan and how much was the influence of men.

Recognizing Spiritual Abuse

The heart of the episode is Chris’s honesty about realizing his church culture put man’s word above God’s word. He describes an atmosphere so leadership-oriented that simply thinking differently from the leaders felt like sin. Asking questions took courage. When he tried to fix problems from within, leadership wanted to “die on the hill” of what the main pastor said.

Leaving wasn’t quick or reckless. Chris and his wife prayed, fasted, wept, and counted the cost over many months. They had been baptized and married in that church and were in full-time ministry there — so walking away meant being leaderless, churchless, and isolated, with nothing but Christ and their family.

The Reset

Chris reframes starting over as ownership, not failure — the idea behind his song “Reset.” Now 36, homeschooling four kids, and chasing a goal of releasing 24 songs in a year, he’s living proof that it’s never too late to begin again. He’s transparent that music doesn’t pay the bills yet, and that faith some days “feels more like drowning.” But his faith in Jesus, he says, has never been stronger.

Why You Should Watch

This episode is a lifeline for anyone navigating church hurt, isolation, or the fear of stepping out. Chris’s message is clear: that wasn’t Jesus — and Jesus can still work through it. Go follow Chris Caro, keep him in prayer, and check out his music. Then watch the full conversation on WhatItIzWhatItBeezLike?!
